Bill Buese, M.S., ATC/LAT
Head Athletic Trainer

Bill Buese has been the head athletic trainer and professor of physical education at Jccc since 1984. A graduate of The University of Central Missouri (formerly Central Missouri State University), Buese earned both his Bachelor's degree in Education and his Master's degree in Athletic Training at UCM. He is a past president of the Kansas Athletic Trainers' Society (KATS), and later served as public relations director for KATS. Buese serves as a Community Clinical Instructor for Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.  He was the athletic trainer for two Kansas Shrine Bowl football teams, and was athletic trainer for the NJCAA All-Star Baseball team vs. Team Japan, and the NJCAA All-Star softball team that played a slate of Canadian elite teams, in 1997. Buese has been a speaker on various topics in athletic training.

Ben Edwinson, B.S., ATC/LAT
Associate Athletic Trainer

Ben Edwinson, a graduate of The University of Kansas, joined the Cavaliers athletic training staff in fall 2005. His previous experiences include both high school athletic training, and rehabilitation at an outpatient clinic. Originally from Texas, his allegiances are split between the University of Texas, and the University of Kansas.

                                                                                Sam Brethauer, B.S., ATC/LAT
                                                                        Associate Athletic Trainer

Sam Brethauer, is a graduate of the University of Kansas. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Education, and became a Certified Athletic Trainer as well as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Sam joined the Jccc athletic training staff in 2007. He has continued his education at the University of Kansas, pursuing a Master's Degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Biomechanics. He has worked at KU as a teaching and research assistant.  He is scheduled to defend his thesis in the Fall of 2007.  While in graduate school Sam worked as a Wellness Specialist and Assistant Athletic Trainer at Kansas City Kansas Community College.  Along with his position at Jccc, Sam works as a Fitness Consultant for the City of Mission, teaching classes, providing individual instruction, and also as a liaison for occupational based fitness programs. 
 

                                                       Athletic Training Preparatory Course

                                                                                 Students who are interested in a career as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)
                                                                                 or in another career in health care, may work under the direction of Jccc
                                                                                 Certified Athletic Trainers Bill Buese, Ben Edwinson and Sam Brethauer. 

 

Athletic training prep students at Jccc follow a directed program with emphasis on coursework pertinent to a career in athletic training specifically, and to health care in general.

General education classes are incorporated into the class plan in order to prepare the student for transfer to a four year college or university to complete work on a degree in athletic training or in another health career.

Jccc has formal transfer/articulation agreements with all of the state colleges and universities in Kansas.

bullet In addition, Jccc's student athletic trainers gain much hands-on experience through daily work with varsity athletes in the training room as well as by traveling with Jccc athletic teams.
bullet Scholarships are available to students participating in the Athletic Training Preparatory academic track.

A sample 4-semester program looks approximately like the following.

Adjustments can be made for students who intend to transfer to various health care education programs,
such as physical therapy, or other allied health professions.

NOTE: The HPER classes listed at the ends of each semester's suggested classes, are intended to offer the student an incentive to attend to his or her own personal wellness. However, other classes of choice may be substituted.

bulletA total of 56-60 credit hours may be earned using the above outline.
bulletAn Associate of Arts (AA) degree consists of 64 total credit hours. Additional credit hours may be taken as part of the student's educational plan if an AA degree is desired by the student.
bulletUpon enrollment, the student should check "Associate of Arts # 1000" even if a degree is not desired.

Transferability

General Education Articulation Agreements exist between Jccc and all of the Kansas State Board of Regents Universities, as well as with other colleges and universities both in and out of state. Transfer of credits is usually seamless in regard to general education classes. Several colleges and universities have agreed to accept the Jccc athletic training-specific classes. Medical support for Jccc athletes is excellent, with local physicians taking a sincere interest in the welfare of Jccc athletes from Kansas, other states, and from around the world. 

Orthopedic surgeons, family practice physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists and Jccc's athletic trainers work as a team in the management of injuries and illnesses to Jccc athletes.

Dr. T.J. Rasmussen, M.D.-- Dr. Rasmussen. is an alumnus of the University of Kansas Medical School. He is currently the president of the medical staff at the Kansas City Orthopedic Institute (KCOI), Chairman of Surgery at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Secretary/treasurer of the KC Orthopedic Society, and President of the KC Rheumatologic Society. Dr. T.J. is a founding member of the KCOI.  His primary specialty is the knee.

Dr. Mark Rasmussen, M.D.--Dr. Rasmussen is an alumnus of the University of Kansas in Cellular biology. He graduated in the top ten of his medical school class at KU in 1988.  While a resident at the Mayo Clinic, he specialized in the upper extremity with special emphasis on arthroscopy.  While at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Mark received the prestigious Joseph Janes Award for academic and surgical excellence.  While completing his fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy following residency, he served as an assistant team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom he still helps when they are in town. He is a founding member of KCOI.

Dr. Dan Stechschulte, M.D., Ph.D.--Dr. Stechschulte is an alumnus of Princeton University, where he played varsity basketball prior to medical school. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Washington Hospitals. While completing his post-residency fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell University, he served as an assistant team physician for the New York Football Giants. Dr. Stechschulte's specialties are in all aspects of sports medicine as well as reconstruction of the knee, shoulder and elbow.

Dr. David Dyck, D.O., Team Physician--Dr. Dyck is a graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He is currently a professor of Family Medicine at KCUMB and an Osteopathic Sports Medicine Fellow. Prior to medical school, Dr. Dyck was a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) at the St. Louis Sports Medicine Clinic. He earned his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University. Dr. Dyck travels extensively around the world with teams representing USA Volleyball. He currently is a consulting physician for the North Kansas City School District, as well as Avila College in Kansas City, MO, and at Jccc.  Dr. Dyck is also a physician at The Athlete Clinic, an outreach of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.

Dr. Lori Boyajian--O'Neill, D.O.--Dr. Boyajian-O'Neill is a graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine and an Osteopathic Sports Medicine Fellow. She is currently the Chair of Family Medicine at KCUMB, and is the current president of the American Academy of Osteopathic Sports Medicine.  Prior to medical school, Dr. Boyajian-O'Neill played softball and was an Academic All America at Pittsburg State University, in Pittsburg, Kansas. Dr. Boyajian-O'Neill is currently a consulting physician with the North Kansas City School District, and with Avila College as well as Jccc.

Dr. George Kolo, D.O.--Dr. Kolo is currently a professor of Family Medicine at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, and an Osteopathic Sports Medicine Fellow. A professional soccer player in Lebanon before coming to the United States, he is currently a Major in the United States Air Force National Guard. He is a consulting physician for the North Kansas City School District as well as Avila College in Kansas City, MO, and at JCCC.

Dr. Rance McClain, D.O.--Dr. McClain is a Graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, an Osteopathic Sports Medicine Fellow,  and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the KCUMB. He participates in triathlons and other endurance events, and does research into improving performance in endurance athletes.

Chiropractic care-The Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic

Dr. Mark Balderston, D.C.-Dr. Balderston is a Jccc alumnus, and All-America baseball player at Jccc from 1978-80.  He received his degree in Chiropractic from Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Kansas City. Dr. Balderston was recently inducted into the Jccc Athletics Hall of Fame. He is currently the head varsity softball coach for Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, and a long time consulting Chiropractor for his high school alma mater, Shawnee Mission North. Dr. Balderston's partner, Dr. Anthony Phillips, D.C. also assists in the care of Jccc athletes. Dr. Phillips played football at Emporia State University prior to Chiropractic school.

Lenexa Family Physicians

Dr. George Bures, M.D.--Dr. Bures is an alumnus of the University of Kansas Medical School, specializing in Family Medicine. He is in private practice at Lenexa Family Physicians in Lenexa, KS. Dr. Bures is also a consulting physician for Shawnee Mission West high school athletic teams.

Dr. Bill Hendriks, M.D.--Dr. Hendriks is an alumnus of the University of Kansas Medical School, specializing in Family Medicine. He is in private practice at Lenexa Family Physicians in Lenexa, KS.
