Strike Photographs

These strike photographs are the courtesy of Julian Ramirez, the waist gunner on the Flying Dutchmen. Aerial photography of the target pre, during and post mission played an important role in such things as determining targets and, of course, end results. The photographs Mr. Ramirez supplied appear to be first generation contact prints from the large negatives used in the K-2 aerial cameras of the day. I find the detail within the images to be quite stunning and to that end I've made available on this page two different sized files of each view. The smaller sized file (and image) should load fairly quickly and give the viewer a good idea of the quality. For viewers with faster connections-or who are patient-the larger file will provide quite a feast for the eyes and imagination. These images are surreal, haunting and gorgeous at the same time.

A quick note. Most of the locations listed below were visited by the Flying Dutchmen and her crew; however, some of the photographs have dates stamped on the back prior to Don McCutchan's crew arrival to the Mendlesham air base. By going through the 34th's mission list I've attempted to put dates with the photographs. Mission numbers are the 34th's numbers. The 'small' files are about 110k files and size out approximately 8"x10." The large files are about 330k and are sized approximately 20"x 25."
