FASH 127   CAD: PATTERN DESIGN I  (4 CR)

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to apply the use of flat pattern methods in developing patterns for original apparel designs. Basic slopers and the CAD (computer-assisted design) Pattern Design System will be used to develop and manipulate patterns. The class will use lecture, demonstration and hands-on experience to teach skills needed in manual and computer-assisted pattern design. The student will plan and create patterns in this class. 2 hrs. lecture, 4 hrs. lab/wk.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the knowledge of pattern drafting in the designing, manipulation, and development of patterns using manual and CAD drafting systems.
  2. Recognize the role of the basic sloper in the development of patterns.
  3. Identify terminology of manual pattern drafting and CAD commands that are consistent to industry pattern drafting systems.
  4. Perform fitting and alteration of basic sloper pattern to personal specifications.
  5. Develop a direction sheet as well as other instructional materials to facilitate the construction preparation techniques, including choice and preparation of fabric, pattern layout, marking and cutting for a newly created pattern.
  6. Select and use appropriate drafting tools including but not limited to a designer's neckline curve, French curve, hip curve, ruler and L square.
  7. Create a marker for a pattern both manually and by inputting data into CAD system.
  8. Demonstrate the application of pattern drafting principles in the development of patterns.
  9. Evaluate personal figure and construction skill level in making decisions during the design process of a pattern.
  10. Calculate the optimum fabric utilization using the CAD pattern system.
  11. Perform methods of organization, storage, and retrieval of patterns within a CAD system.
  12. Designate the growth areas within a pattern to grade according to an X and Y scale.
  13. Recognize the possible ramifications of choices made for pattern, fabric, and personal body type on the planning and construction process.
