Intro

The Curtiss P-40 saw action on every front in WWII and was in US service from the beginning through the end of US involvement. But the P-40's legacy will always be as the aircraft flown by Claire Lee Chennault's American Volunteer Group (also known as the Flying Tigers). 100 P-40s (considered obsolete) were given to the Chinese through the Lend-lease in 1941. Chennault trained the pilots to use the plane's strengths to exploit the enemies weaknesses. In approximately 6 months of combat the A.V.G. officially destroyed 297 planes with another153 probable. All of this was accomplished with the loss of only 12 P-40's in combat.

R.T. Smith's P-40 from the 3rd Pursuit Squadron (Hell's Angels). R.T.'s victories are recorded between 8.4 and 9. The paint scheme is dark green and dark earth upper, under surfaces were most likely gray - Thanks, T Clements!

Commanded by Col. John "Jack" Chennault, son of Gen. Claire Chennault, the P-40s of the 11 FS 343rd FG were painted in a variation on the theme made famous by the AVG. Pictured is a special "winterized"; P-40E (it is hard to notice in this small picture, but the area around the exhaust ports is filled in). This helped combat the extreme climate of the Aleutian Islands.
