Air Tank Testing

High pressure air tanks should be tested periodically for safety. Many places will not test the air tanks from our Yaks since no DOT specs exist for them. If you decide to do them yourself, first of all, be careful! Be sure to fill with water and pressurize to test pressure; from the photo below, the placard states 50 kg/cm2 (700 PSI) as the working pressure and 75 kg/cm2 (1100 PSI) as the testing pressure.

Frank Haertlein has passed some helpful information for sending the tanks in for testing...
They (TYM's INC.) realize the tanks are not built to any know US standard so they use a formula for pressure testing based on the operating pressure of the tank. They won't certify your tank but at least they'll tell you if it's safe or not. If you send them your tanks you need to state the operating pressure (700 PSI) so they can apply their formula (usually 5/3 working pressure). They also send you a printout of tank stretch and if it's too much they'll tell you so. They have all the fittings needed to do foreign tanks. They have done YAKs and MIG tanks for other customers. They're located near LAX.
