Discuss Critical Review Assignment.
- What is the purpose of a critical review?
- What are the kinds of things to find in an essay when completing a critical review?
- When analyzing the argumentative strategy consider: logos, pathos, and
ethos.
Critical Review Web Workshop:
- With the aims of the critical review assignment in mind, you will complete a group
critical review of a web site. You will collect information today and submit a group
work-in-progress report (5 points) by the end of the hour. Wednesday you will review
your web site for the class by creating a group web page and a group oral report (10
points).
- Your group will want to consider the following when preparing your report:
- Briefly summarize the web site you are reviewing.
- Explain fully what you see as the purpose of the web site.
- Offer your group's opinion on whether the web site is good or not.
- Explain why you think it is good or bad by considering the following questions:
- How well does it fulfill its purpose?
- How well does it keep your interest?
- Is the style of the web site good? In other words, is the site easy to navigate?
- In general, you want to consider how well the site makes use of logos, pathos,
and ethos.
- Here are the web sites from which to choose. Each group should only choose one web
site. Each group must review a different web site.
Wednesday
Continue with Group Critical Review of web sites.
- Construct a web page of your review.
- Present your review to the class.
Portfolios returned.
Homework: Choose an opinionated
essay of substantial length (2-5 pages) for your critical review essay.
Friday: No Class.
- On Monday, you must show me the essay you've chosen. If you don't have an essay by
the end of Monday's class, you must write your critical review on "People Don't Know
Right from Wrong Anymore" from Writing in the Disciplines. We will work on
prewriting exercises in class on Monday.
- On Wednesday, you will write your essay in class. If you are not in class on Wednesday,
you must make up your essay in the Testing Center. If you do not write your essay in
class, you will not receive the ten points available for completing a rough draft.
