Introduction
to Writing Class Activities for Week 17: Dec. 8-12, 1997
Complete final out-of-class
journal entry (#7) this week.
Monday:
-
How to organize Essay 3: Argumentation.
-
Discussion of sample student argumentative essay.
-
Continue drafting Essay 3.
-
Homework: Complete a rough draft of
Essay 3. You should be able to bring an introduction and at least
two body paragraphs to class on Wednesday.
Wednesday:
-
Drafting and Peer Review Workshop. In place of a regular class period
in which we spend the entire hour reading each other's drafts, I want to
use this hour to both write and critique. To receive points,
you will need to have completed most of your essay by the end of class,
and you will need to have at least one other student read and comment upon
some of your essay.
-
Homework:
-
Complete Journals.
-
Finish Essay Three. The final draft should have an introduction,
body and conclusion. It should be at least two pages in length.
I will accept this on Friday or the day we take the final exam.
Friday:
-
Journal entries due at the beginning of class. You should have 7 out-of-class
entries and 3 in-class entries for a total of 10. You also should
have completed two mistake logs -- one for Essay 1 and one for Essay 2.
Journals turned in after I've collected them will be counted as late.
-
This is the last day to turn in any late essays and paragraphs. Do
not bring them to the final. All of the major assignments
must be completed to pass this class. Any
student who has not turned in a major assignment will receive an "F" for
the class.
-
Discussion of final exam: Giving Advice. Your final exam will ask
you to write a letter to a future Introduction to Writing student. Your
letter must explain how to succeed in Introduction to Writing. You
will need to have at least three points of advice, and you will need to
clearly explain why those points are important to follow.
-
Grammar Review. We will do a quick worksheet covering the major grammar
lessons we've completed this semester. The final will also include
a short grammar section.
-
Homework:
-
Finish your revision of one of either Essay 1 or Essay 2 for the portfolio.
You will turn this in on the day of the final. In addition to correcting
any grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes, you will also want to
make any necessary content changes. These might include re-writing
your thesis, further developing a paragraph, or adding a new paragraph
or two. This is the last part of the portfolio. If you have turned
in the other two parts on time, you can expect to receive a 50 out of 50
on your portfolio. Remember, the portfolio must be completed to pass
the class.
-
Finish writing Essay 3 if you have not already turned it in. Turn
it in when you take the final.
-
Prepare for the final exam by reviewing some of the grammar lessons in
the book and thinking of points for the advice letter. You may not
bring a pre-written essay to the final, but you may bring an outline of
the major points you will want to make.
-
The final is from 12:30-2:30, Monday Dec. 15,
1997. Computers will be given on
a first come, first served basis.
