Writing Assignment # 1 -- Writing Diagnostic -- Wednesday Aug. 20

For your first writing assignment, you are to write a short article on another person in the class.  This will help you to get used to observing and gathering information.  It also relieves you of the responsibility of having to write about yourself during the first week of class. Before writing, you will want to ask this person a lot of questions such as the following:

Be sure to take notes as you listen to the person.  As you're talking with the person, be sure to have them explain things in detail so you can be sure to have plenty of information for your paper.  Remember, if you don't have enough information, you will have to start making up things about the person, and nobody wants that.  Also be sure to get a good look at the person because you want to fill your essay with a lot of physical description.

Before beginning your paper think about the most interesting thing the person told you.  This interesting information will probably work well to open your article.  Better essays will be organized around a central theme (the honesty of the person, the intelligence of the person, etc.), rather than simply listing a bunch of information about the person.

You will want to make your article about 300 words in length. It will probably take you the entire hour to write it.  While this essay will not be given a letter grade, it will be included in your pre-portfolio, which is worth 50 points.
