Starting with the work of Gregor Mendel, genetics has always been one of the more mathematically oriented areas of biology. This colloquium will review some of the basic findings of the human genome project and some of the major mathematical tools used by geneticists in their quest to understand the structure and evolution of the human genome and apply this knowledge to extend our understanding of human biology. Some of these tools have a long history in biology while others are new applications developed originally for other areas of science. Sophisticated methods of analysis will become routine in genetics at the application level and a major challenge of both mathematicians and biologists will be to provide the critical reasoning skills for our students to deal with the wealth of information available from the human genome project and parallel projects using other species.
