Annotated Bibliography

Teachers wanting students to have research opportunities and to learn to annotate may find an annotated bibliography project useful for both teacher and students.

Advantages of this Assignment Type

Students have to be accountable for research.  They also learn how to annotate at the same time they practice the proper form for a standard documentation system.

Teachers benefit because annotated bibliographies are relatively easy to read and grade.

Procedure

Here's the procedure:

bulletShow students an example of an annotated bibliography.  Make clear the type of documentation system (for example, MLA) you want them to use.
bulletAssign students a specific number of bibliographic entries for each of the course's themes. As you design the assignment, consider whether you wish to designate the nature of the resources (so many books, articles, internet resources, etc.).
bulletIf you wish, instruct students to write an introduction, placing the annotations in the larger context of their course work.
