Parts of an Assignment

Students benefit from written assignments.  They avoid confusion or misinterpretations of oral directions. Information sheets for well-developed assignments include:

  1. purpose
  2. audience
  3. writing task
  4. stylistic/formatting information (for example, preferred citations forms)
  5. resources available to students (for example, preparatory writing useful for this assignment, readings, library services)
  6. grading criteria/value of this paper in relation to the course
  7. deadline

Finely drawn assignments establish parameters without constraining individuals' thinking or creativity. They also combat plagiarism.
