Helping Basic Writers

Basic writers are likely to be uncomfortable with the form and content of academic writing. They may demonstrate extensive understanding of the course material in class discussions; however, their prior experience causes them to see academic writing as a threat instead of a means of communication. They may operate with a set of grammar rules distinct from standard English, and they may not understand how to show relationships among the ideas they are trying to write about.

The Bedford Guide for Writing Tutors suggests ways that tutors can support these students. These tips are useful for teachers, too.

Recognize that academic work is likely to frustrate these students.

·         Combine oral communication with written communication to help make message connections.  Articulate what you think they are trying to say, and ask them to clarify.  They will learn from your oral sentence structure.

·         Target specific problems at a conference instead of working at all levels of the writing.
