Writing the Paper

The write-up of your findings can take various forms.  I’ll give you one that should be fairly direct and not terribly time consuming, but please don’t take this structure as required.

I.          What you are trying to do:  the research question (assignment sheet and bottom of Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum xxix)

II.          About Comp. II

A.     Nationally

1. WPA (keeping in mind that that’s for a whole year—I and II)

2. Behrens and Rosen’s essay to students

B.     At JCCC

1. Course description:  e-mail

2. Course objectives:  on web (connect through the Pipeline web connections for this class)

C.     For this class

1. Course syllabus:  statement and objectives (available at website)

2. Class practice

D.     Your own impressions and needs

III.         What others say:  the interviews—the challenge here will be to organize your information in the “best” form for what you have to work with

IV.       Your conclusions:  Go back to the question—needs not be terribly long but should be consistent with what you reported.

I gave 500 as a suggested length; please don’t feel constrained by it, especially if you are creating a collaborative paper.  The paper should be in prose form; in other words, please don’t go to a Q and A format.

About writing a collaborative paper:

Several strategies work well.

bulletAs a group you might decide to work at the screen together through the entire process.
bullet

You might divide up according to the writing process, with one person taking the lead in each round.  You’ll probably want to work together to plan/pre-write the document; then, Person 1 could draft; Person 2 could revise; and Person 3 could proofread.

bullet

You might divide up tasks according to the paper outline.  If you were using the outline above, Person 1 (and maybe 3) might draft II; Person 2 might draft III (after all members helped organize that section); and Person 3 might do I and IV.  Then all could come together and smooth out the prose so that the voice is consistent and the document is clear of sentence-level problems.

bullet

I will provide folders so that you can leave material in them between classes.  That way if one person is absent a day, the others can still work.
