1801
On the political scene, 1801 was a very active year. The House of Representatives decided Presidential election, making Thomas Jefferson President and Aaron Burr Vice-President. Great Britain created a "United Kingdom" with Ireland, with Catholics not eligible to vote. The Pasha of Tripoli declared war on the United States and John Marshall became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The New York Evening Post was established and Robert Hare, a Pennsylvania chemist, invents the blow torch.
At the beginning of the year, the mint had no copper to strike cents or half cents. The first cents of the year were struck in early August, from planchets received in July. Mint records show that 1,362,837 large cents were delivered in 1801. No half cents were struck dated 1801.
Sixteen different varieties are known for 1801 large cents, 12 Sheldon numbered varieties (S-213 through S-224) and 4 NC's. The best coins for 1801 in the National Numismatic Collection are S-219 (2) and S-224 (1).
