1807
This year, Aaron Burr was tried for treason but acquitted. Congress passed the Embargo Act, which prohibits trade with any foreign country, but this did not prevent the Mint from obtaining a shipment of planchets from Boulton in England in October. Robert Fulton launched the Clermont, his 150 foot long steamboat and traveled 150 miles up the Hudson River in 32 hours. Eli Terry and Seth Thomas began the manufacture of clocks using interchangeable parts in Connecticut and Robert Mills designed the wings of Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
In Europe, Napoleon concluded the Treaty of Tilsit with Russia and Prussia, depriving each of some territory. Napoleon also occupied Portugal and introduced a commercial law code for France. Sir Humphry Davy, an English chemist, discovered the elements potassium and sodium. The first Ascot Gold Cup in horse racing was held in England this year.
The mint reported delivering 727,221 cents in 1807. Many of these were undoubtedly dated earlier. Six varieties of cents (S-271 through S-276)) are known for this year. Two of these varieties exhibit an overdate - 1807 over 1806. A total of 476,000 half cents were delivered in 1807. This number probably includes half cents dated 1804 through 1806. Only one variety of half cent, C-1, is known for this year.
The nicest coins include C-1 (1) and S 271.
