1810
The third U.S. census showed a population of 7.2 million people, including 1.2 million slaves. The U.S. resumed trade with France, even though the French were still boarding our ships. Trade with England was still illegal. West Florida was annexed to the U.S. after Americans in the area revolted against Spanish rule. Yale Medical School was established this year.
Elsewhere, revolts started throughout South and Central America. Napoleon consolidated his gains in north west Europe while suffering defeats in Spain. The world's first public billiards rooms were opened in London and Dalton published his New System of Chemical Philosophy.
The mint reported delivering 1,458,500 cents in 1810. Five varieties of cent (S 281 through S 285) are known for this year. Most, if not all, of these coins were probably dated 1810. A total of 215,00 half cents were delivered this year. This number may include some half cents dated 1809. The stock pile of half cents in the mint was almost depleted by the end of the year, which meant production would now be done on demand. Only one variety of half cent, C 1, is known for this year.
The nicest coins for this year are C 1 (1) and S 282.
