This year, U.S. forces capture Toronto, Canada and Captain Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie. General Harrison defeated the British at the Battle of the Thames, Ontario, where Shawnee chief Tecumseh died. The game of "craps" was introduced in New Orleans.

Elsewhere, Napoleon was winning and losing battles in Europe, but his forces were now greatly outnumbered. This year, Pride and Prejudice was published by Austen and the London Philharmonic Society was founded.

Using planchets from the 1812 Boulton shipment, the mint struck and released 418,000 cents this year, probably all dated 1813. Two different varieties are known for  cents of this year (S-292 and S-293).
