     The United States and England established the U.S. - Canada border at the 49th parallel and Illinois became the 21st state this year. Congress adopted a flag with 13 stripes and a star for each state in an upper corner blue field. The Savannah became the first steam powered vessel to cross the Atlantic, even though she used her sails for much of the journey. Peter Durand also introduced the tin can to America.

    Beethoven went deaf and Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1818.San Martin won independence for Chili and Jean Pierre Boyer became president of Haiti. Jean-Baptiste Dumas, a French chemist, first used iodine to treat goiter.

    A total of 3,167,000 cents were struck and delivered this year, some probably dated 1817. Ten different varieties are known for the cents of 1818 (N-1 through N-10). N-10 was part of the Randall hoard and is still reasonably available in uncirculated condition.  

    The nicest coins in the collection for this year include N 5 (2), N 8 (3), N 10 (1), and N 10 (2).
