Alabama became the 22nd state and Maine was separated from Massachusetts this year. Spain also ceded Florida to the United States, with the government assuming Spain's $5 million debt to Americans. The Supreme Court upholds the right of Congress to create the Bank of the United States. William Strickland based his design for the bank on the Parthenon.
This year, Simon Bolivar , the "great liberator," became the first president of Gran Columbia, an area that covered northern South America and Panama. A 12 hour working day was established for employees in England and the British East India Company established a colony at Singapore. Byron also published the first two cantos of Don Juan.
Cents of 1819 provide wide and narrow dates, near and far stars, and overdates. A total of 2,671,000 cents were struck and delivered this year, probably all dated 1819. Ten different varieties are known for the cents of 1819 (N-1 through N-10). A number of uncirculated cents dated 1819, varieties N-8 and N-9, are available to collectors, thanks to the Randall hoard.
Some of the nicer coins for this year include N-6 (1) and N-8. N-6 (4) is a coin from President Dwight D. Eisenhower's coin collection.
