1821

This year, the United States occupied Florida, with Andrew Jackson the first governor. Moses Austin received a charter for a settlement of 300 families from the Spanish governor of Texas. His son, Stephen, established the first legal settlement of Americans the next year. James Fenimore Cooper wrote The Spy, which launched his literary career. The first public high school was established in Boston, America's first tunnel, 450 feet long, opened near Auburn, PA, and Congress rejected a proposal that the United States convert to the metric system.

French archeologist Jean-Francois Champollion used the Rosetta Stone to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics and English physicist Michael Faraday discovered the property of electromagnetic revolution. In South and Central America, Spanish rule crumbles, as Peru, Mexico, and Guatemala gain their independence. Bolivar's defeat of the Spanish at Carabobo assures the independence of Venezuela

A total of 389,000 cents were delivered this year, probably all dated 1821. This date is more common than the mintage suggests, so some cents dated 1821 were probably struck and/or delivered in later years. There are only two different varieties are known for this date (N-1 and N-2). No half cents were struck this year.

The nicest coin for this year is N 1 (1).
