This year, the United States recognized the newly independent republics in South and Central America, Florida was organized as a territory, and a slave rebellion was nipped in the bud. Thirty five slaves were hung. James Fenimore Cooper published The Pioneer, the first of his "Leatherstocking Tales." Yellow fever struck New York in late summer.
