1824
The Presidential election this year results in a no-decision. Andrew Jackson got the most electoral votes, 99, but this was not a majority. The election was sent to the House of Representatives. Rensselaer Polytech became America's first school of science and engineering, Jedediah Smith found South Pass, the "gateway" to the west, and Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake.
Elsewhere, Beethovan, now totally deaf, composed his Symphany #9 in D Minor, English bricklayer Joseph Aspdin patented the process for making Portland cement, and the British captured Rangoon in the Anglo-Burmese War.
There are five varieties known for this date (N 1 - N 5). Two are overdates (N 1 and N5). The mint delivered 1,262,000 cents this year. Since there were no cent deliveries in 1823, this number probably includes coins dated both 1823 and 1824.
The nicest coins for this date in the national collection are N-3 and N-4 (2).
