1826
This year, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died within an hour of each other on July 4, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. James Fenimore Cooper also published The Last of the Mohicans, Amasa Holcomb built America's first reflecting telescope in Massachusetts, and the Baltimore and Ohio became the first passenger rail line.
Elsewhere, Persia attacked Russia, starting a war, the first railroad tunnel in England was built, and Felix Mendelssohn performed his "Overture" to Shakespeare's A Mid-summer Night's Dream.
The mint delivered 1,517,425 large cents and 234,000 half cents this year. All were probably dated 1826. Eight varieties of large cents (N1 - N 8) and two varieties of half cent (C 1 and C 2) are known. None are rare.
The better coins for this year in the National Numismatic collection include C 1 (1) and N 5 (1).
