This year, Andrew Jackson was reelected president and Martin Van Buren vice president a South Carolins convention declared the tariffs of 1828 and 1831832 void. The Black Hawk War was fought in Illinois and Wisconsin, the Army abolished its daily liquor ration, the first steam boat on Lake Michigan reached Fort Dearborn (now Chicago), and the European cholera epidemic reached America. In New York City 2,251 people died while 6,000 died in New Orleans in a 12 day period.
Elsewhere, Switzerland suffers political unrest, with some of her cantons wanting liberal reform. Sir Charles Wheatstone invented the stereoscope in England, Thomas Hodgkin, an English physician, describes the illness later given his name, and, Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin took the pen name "George Sand when she published her novel Indiana.
The mint delivered 2,362,000 large cents and no half cents this year. Half cents dated 1832 exist, however. They were struck late in 1832 and not delivered until 1833. Walter Breen estimates that about 90,000 half cents dated 1832 were struck. The Red Book states 51,000. There are three varieties of large cents (N1 - N 3) and three varieties of half cent (C 1 - C 3) known for this year. The large cents include small (N 1 and N 2) and large letter reverse legends. Proofs are known for all three varieties of half cent and for one large cent (N 1) this year. The cent proofs are one-sided, using a technique borrowed from the French mint.
