1835
For the only time in our history, the national debt was paid off this year. The Seminole War started this year and an attempt was made on the life of President Jackson, the first attempt to assassinate an American president. P.T. Barnum started his traveling circus and a “penny newspaper,” the “New York Herald” was founded.
In Europe, Charles Dickens published his first book, a collection of short stories entitled Sketches by Boz, Hans Christian Anderson published his first volume of fairy tales, and Coriolis first described his “effect,” which made weather prediction more accurate.
The mint delivered 3,878,400 large cents and 539,000 half cents this year. Some of the large cents struck this year were dated 1834 while others were dated 1831 (N 3)! One possible explanation for the huge increase in large cent mintage this year is that Venezuela placed an order for 1.1 million cents and the order was approved! This year also saw the introduction of the new “young head” Liberty on the obverse. Large cents are known with a large 8 in the date and large and small obverse stars. The half cents were delivered on December 31. It is believed that 141,000 of these were dated 1834. The assumed mintage of 1835 half cents is 398,000. Nineteen different varieties of large cents (N 1 – N 19) and two different half cent varieties (C 1 and C 2) are known for this date. Both half cent varieties are also known in proof.
The nicest coins in the national numismatic collection include C 2 (1), N 2 (2), and N 15 (2).
