This year, Michigan became the 26th state, the Texas Rangers began with a force of three men in Waco, and a small pox epidemic wiped out several Indian tribes in the west. Congress also increased the number of justices on the Supreme Court from seven to nine. William Proctor and James Gamble started a candle and soap making business this year in Cincinnati, but nation wide 618 banks failed and the country went into a depression. Coins were hoarded.
In England this year, Victoria became queen and Benjamin Disraeli was elected to the British Parliament. Charles Dickens published Oliver Twist and German reformer Friedrich Froebel opened his first kindergarten.
The mint delivered 5,558,300 large cents this year. The increase in production was undoubtedly due to the need for circulating coins, due to economic depression sweeping the country. All the large cents struck and delivered this year wereprobably dated 1837. From this date, coins struck and delivered were all dated the year of issue. No half cents were struck this year. Sixteen varieties (N 1 – N 7 and N 9 – N 17) of large cents are known for the year. Liberty has both plain and beaded hair cords on varieties this year. Six varieties (N 3, N 6, N 7, N 9, N 10 and N 13) are known as proofs. No half cents were struck this year.
The nicest coins in the national numismatic collection include N 5 (2), N 7 (3), N 9 (1).
